Welcome September!

As we step into the new season, we’re excited to share updates, stories, and highlights from our Koala family. This month marks a time of growth and reflection as we continue to make strides in expanding our services and helping those in need. From adding new locations to providing therapy at home, in schools, and at our private learning centers, we are committed to making a positive impact in our community.

Client Spotlight

Diagnosed with ASD at just 16 months. Noah’s story is one of resilience, love, and unwavering support from his family. Noah’s mom, Sandra, is a pediatrician who has been a rock for the family, especially during the challenging early days of the diagnosis. Noah’s dad, Jorge, initially struggled to accept the diagnosis, finding it difficult when comparing Noah with his other children. Despite the challenges, Noah’s parents remained determined to provide him with the best opportunities, stimulating his brain from an early age. Once shy and withdrawn, he is now social and interactive. A recent family trip to Disney World was a proud moment for his parents, specifically dad. Although his siblings, Cassie and Lucas, were hesitant to join in, Noah was eager to participate in the performance. His parents were anxious about how he would react, but Noah exceeded their expectations, enjoying the experience without any emotional challenges. For his mom, a moment she says she is most proud of Noah is seeing Noah interact with his siblings, Cassie and Lucas, for the first time. She felt nothing but deep pride and happiness.

The family discovered Koala while searching for therapy centers during their move from Naples. After visiting four different centers, they chose Koala for its family-oriented environment and the strong connections between staff and clients. The improvements they have seen in Noah, particularly in his social and intellectual development, have been profound. Noah is a free spirit who loves fruits, pasta, and all things related to the ocean, especially sharks and whales. His awareness of his own abilities and limits is a testament to his growth, and his family couldn’t be prouder of the person he is becoming.

Employee Spotlight

This month, we shine the spotlight on Yasmery, our dedicated Billing Specialist and newly Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). Yasmery’s journey with Koala is unique—Koala found her, rather than the other way around. Originally, she was a billing representative for a health company, but her true passion has always been to help children with neurological disorders,
especially ASD.
Her interest in this field was sparked in high school when she participated in the Early Steps program, caring for the children of the school faculty. She admired the RBTs she observed and was inspired by their work. However, the defining moment in her career path came when she stood up for her friend Eudeen, an African orphan with ASD, who was being bullied at school.
Her courageous act of reporting the bullies solidified her desire to advocate for and support children like Eudeen.
In her free time, Yasmery enjoys reading and building intricate wooden puzzles. Her most recent accomplishment is a wooden puzzle that transforms into a clock shaped like an owl—a testament to her patience and creativity.

ABA Term of the Month

This month’s ABA term is Extinction. In Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), extinction refers to the process of reducing or eliminating a behavior by no longer providing reinforcement for that behavior. For example, if a child frequently throws tantrums to get attention and the attention is consistently withheld when the tantrum occurs, over time, the tantrum behavior is likely to decrease and eventually stop. Extinction is an essential technique in ABA, particularly in managing challenging behaviors, but it must be used carefully to ensure it is applied effectively and ethically.
