Client Spotlight
Christian Jose Ulloa
Christian Jose Ulloa’s journey with autism began with subtle changes his family noticed around 18 months—he had stopped talking, responding to his name, and making eye contact. These shifts, combined with frequent outbursts and sensitivities to routine, led his mom, Vanessa, to seek answers, finding that autism might explain these behaviors. When Christian was formally diagnosed at age 3, Vanessa felt both relief in finally understanding her son and anxiety about the road ahead. This marked the beginning of “rediscovering” her son. His diagnosis became a transformative moment, especially for Vanessa and Alberto, Christian’s dad. Who, though deeply emotional, embraced the journey forward for Christian’s well-being.
Determined to support Christian in the best way possible, Vanessa and Alberto worked together to rediscover their son, adjusting to each stage with patience and unconditional love. This journey found new momentum when they connected with Koala, the only agency to secure Christian’s support while making the family feel comfortable. Koala’s dedicated BCBA provided Christian with critical life skills, from learning his mom’s phone number and address to self-regulating his emotions—a progression Vanessa describes as instrumental.
Since starting ABA therapy, Christian has made impressive strides. His emotional regulation has significantly improved, allowing him to apologize after difficult moments, and he now expresses himself with greater ease. Vanessa’s proudest moment came when Christian, though speaking only limited words, courageously protected his sister by retrieving a toy taken from her and checking to make sure she was okay—this early show of empathy and love became a memory she cherishes.
Christian’s favorite foods are pasta, chicken and fries, rice and beans, and lemonade, which he enjoys making himself. His adventurous spirit has led him to Colorado, New York, Connecticut, Mexico, Colombia, and on a Disney cruise to the Bahamas. Outdoorsy and creative, Christian loves bike riding, park swings, and inventing stories with his toys. His creative side shines through in his love for drawing, Legos, and imaginative play, while his connection with his sister reflects his big-hearted nature.

Employee Spotlight
Anthony Lazaro Curbelo
Community Relations Manager
Joined: January 2024
Anthony first discovered Koala through a family connection. He draws profound inspiration from his little sister, who was diagnosed with autism at just 3 years old which is why he chose to work and remain in this field. Growing up, he struggled to understand her behaviors, but his journey into the field with Koala ABA has provided him with invaluable insights. This experience has not only deepened his understanding of autism but has also fueled his passion for advocating for individuals with developmental differences.
Anthony’s enthusiasm for his work is matched by his love for sports, outdoor activities, exploring new foods, traveling, and spending quality time with his family. His experiences and personal journey with his sister have brought new passion and understanding to his role, allowing him to connect meaningfully with the families we serve every day.

Information Station
In this month’s Information Station, we’re spotlighting Discrete Trial Training (DTT), a core teaching strategy in ABA therapy. DTT breaks down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps to help children with autism learn new skills in a structured way. Each step is designed to build confidence and mastery, creating clear and structured learning opportunities.
